Commercial Insurance Requirement: Workers’ Comp & Commercial Auto
All states we cover require worker’s compensation insurance if you have one worker or more in that state. Independent contractors are exempted, but remote workers count. If you have a remote worker on your team, it’s best to cover your bases and include those states.
Washington and Wyoming have specific in-state programs for worker’s comp. If your business is domiciled outside Washington but you have employees in-state, you will need to pay in to the L&I program. Wyoming allows for exemptions, but you still have to register with the state to see if you receive one.
All states also require commercial auto coverage for vehicles owned or operated by the business. Different states have different requirements and considerations of what constitutes commercial use, so talk with us to ensure you’ve got all your bases covered anywhere you operate.
Baseline Business Insurance Products
While not required by the state, certain business insurance products may be required by customers, suppliers, partners, or other entities your business is involved with. The most common include general liability and errors and omissions. Fortunately, these policies often provide national coverage. When you work with 11 Western, we always check that your policy is valid in all the states that you do business.
General business liability insurance protects you from bodily injury and property damage claims that happen during business. For example, the owner of a retail store is protected from a customer tripping and falling.
Errors and Omissions policies, also called professional liability, are especially helpful for consultative businesses. A website developer may be covered by an EO policy if a product they implement has a glitch, for example.
